VISAGE DE JEUNE FEMME

Visage de jeune femme – oil on canvas – 2012

Michele Giardina Writer

For Nunzio Barrera art is freedom, sentiment and a sincere confession of what it means to be human. His language is simple, honest and full of deep emotions.
Clear and strong is the human and social message in his works. He learned from Rodolfo Cristina and Valente Assenza the technical knowledge necessary to give structure to a pictorial idea, without compromissing spontaneous creativity.
Their suggestions, advice and love for all things beautiful have been for this artist a true learning arena, while at the same time remaining free from different stimuli.
There are few artists today who are able to respect the inheritance of their formative expression and whoever has the strength to continue on this path is able to depict nature and reality with the light and colors of his soul.
Nunzio makes use of different means of expression with full freedom.
He has achieved, thrugh the years, artistic maturity and it is this conviction tha allows him to be always faithful to a delicate and poetic form of expression.
Since the universal message of art is always set beyond time and history, leaving ample space for freedom for those who wish to express themselves with the language of beauty and truth, it seems natural that Nunzio Barrera fits within this context, because he is spontaneus, simple and free. He is not interested in the passing fashions, experiences that leave no documented sign.
Barrera’s unassuming personality does not allow him to fabricate or contrive his art. He is always the same.

In the paintings of Nunzio Barrera there is all the romantic poetry reflective of the past which has been swept away by moder times. We can refer to him as the true painter-poet since from every painting flow lyrics which are full of sentiment and carry forcibly every sensitive soul to reflect on the remote and nostalgic existence tha will never be reclaimed.
Nunzio Barrera influences profoundly the heart where only few can reach with a paint brush; gloom and solitude are feelings that emerge suddendly to tell us: man this is your reality.
Nunzio Barrera goes beyond limits as an artist and as man. On a constant rise, at only 34 yers old, he has reached today such high levels in his art to be considered rightly number one in its class.
This is a portrait of Nunzio Barrera, a typical home grown local painter, gifted as much with humility and unpretentiousness as with friendlines, much attracted to beauty and the past, which is emphasized constantly in his work.
There are very few like him, particularly in these times of great confusion, where in the world of paintings, a paint brush carries more search for gain than passion. Nunzio Barrera nonetheless has show one more time the true extent of his expression which flows from deep in his heart and which is called art.
Time has shown that he has been right, as time never betrays he who persists without interest and with inborn vocation within the community as moral and spiritual teacher.

Nunzio Barrera is a young artist who has gradually improved his paintings with continuous research and applied study to be able to transmit to others confidence and hope.
His landscapes and seascapes, besides being tinged with a dreamy and subtle melancholy, contain a message of strength, love and the gift of understanding which does not pose difficulty for people, even the most unpretentious and simple.
The warm strokes, the blues and yellow, create an altogether harmonic composition, balanced and charming, enlivened by the quite personal color effects.
It is almost a faint and pleasant song which fascinates everyone. It can also be said that this young artist has an unique mastery of his art which is very clear and promising.

Luigi Rogasi Writer

Without a doubt he is a versatile artist: he moves with ease from a portrait to a still life, from a bucolic landscape to a seascape, from nudes to rarified, breezy and peaceful panoramic views.
The way Nunzio Barrera has chosen to communicate is with a light and musical paint brush, rich colors, revealing his inborn artistic capabilities that blend and fuse thoroughly with precise and linear drawing, entrusted to an especially confident and focused hand.
His artwork is clear, readable and soothing: it is delightful to view, soul-felt and one is struck by these images so fresh and graceful.
We are for sure in the presence of a true artist who will surprise us as the future belongs to him.

The Sicilian landscapes of the artist from Pozzallo are inspired by his poetic vision; always the same, not at all monotonous on canvas as it is different every time in the conception and execution, as different as the seascapes tha inspired Barrera’s initial production.
The lyric and warm landscapes diffused by the Mediterranean light are where the Sicilian artist has been immersedand has nourished his creative inspiration.
Nunzio Barrera’s message has been entrusted to color which he uses with the competence of an accomplished artist.
He expresses his inner feelings on the canvases which become solar landscapes of his native island.
They are a gift of love to his island, of which he is an ambassador beyond its boundaries.
The color of a spring afternoon is always delicate and at the same time vibrant, as to communicate to the observer of the canvas a pleasant sensation of warmth, a soft feeling of blessedness, of innermost happiness.
In fact, in Nunzio Barrera’s figurative paintings there is expressed an attentive and naturalistic luminosity, supported by a linear transparency, making the reading of every one of his paintings a pleasant experience.
Thus we appreciate the hills scattered with carob trees, the fields of fertile wheat, demarcated by the characteristic dry-stone walls; the clearings, sundried and burned by the blazing sun of august, of which we can catch a glimpse where the shadow of the green and leafy trees ends; the rippled sea always of an intense color of blue.
On every landscape looms a crystal blue sky, at times dotted with clouds.
Nunzio Barrera, a self-taught artist who, with his almost religious love of paintings, has prolifically given us his full pictorial creative capability, more and more refined, supported by relentless and painstaking research.
He has given us an undeniable example of his maturity, which has been highly praised in all the recognition tha he has received, and where he has been crowed with acknowledgements in Sicily and in Milan, bestowned by qualified panels of international competitions, always more important and selective.

L'AMORE PER LA VITA

L’amore per la vita – olio su tela, cm 50×70 – 2004

Caterina Randazzo Art Critic
